We are Charnwood Molecular (CML) a leading Contract Research Organisation (CRO), providing medicinal and synthetic chemistry services to the global pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical industries.

As part of our ongoing expansion, we are looking for an Associate Director (Medicinal Chemistry) to support the business at the client interface in the delivery of scientific expertise and strategic direction to our client’s projects.

This is a managerial role that is fundamentally designed to ensure cross-functional strategic alignment and effective resource allocation from the chemistry department in support of the delivery of integrated drug discovery projects.

Candidate specification:

What you’ll do:

  • Use your project-proven knowledge and understanding of modern drug discovery design principles to provide strategic input and technical direction to our project teams
  • Work with colleagues and collaborators across different business units to develop a shared strategic vision to support the data-driven delivery of high quality scientific solutions to complex technical challenges
  • Represent the company in a commercial capacity, routinely interacting with existing and prospective clients, as well as preparing detailed scientific proposals to secure new business
  • Work with junior staff to support their development and growth within the organisation, as well as championing our culture of inclusion and continuous professional development
  • Identify new technologies and capabilities that could add value to the way in which we work, as well as enhancing the efficiency with which we can deliver projects

What you’ll need:

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry with a proven ability to provide insightful contributions in both areas
  • Extensive experience of leading medicinal chemistry project teams in the delivery of small molecule therapeutic agents (gained within a pharmaceutical company, research institute or CRO, with >10 years of industrial experience)
  • An understanding of computational chemistry, disease biology, biological/biophysical screening methods and DMPK, and the importance of the effective interaction and application of these different disciplines to the successful development of drugs
  • Experience of working collaboratively with cross-functional teams in bioscience, DMPK and Computational Chemistry to develop and implement effective strategies to support our client’s drug discovery programmes
  • Significant scientific management experience, with a proven ability in the mentorship and development of direct reports, setting high scientific standards
  • Ability to contribute strongly to the refinement and evolution of strategies for chemistry-based drug discovery, and to communicate and implement those strategies
